Our client, the leading provider of environmental solutions, is seeking a Shift Engineer (Relief) to provide supervision and direct a variety of tasks at their biomass plant in Merritt, BC. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this role is responsible for supervising and directing the activities of the Operations personnel; perform Control Room Operator duties; and will assume the responsibilities of other engineers (including the Operations Manager) in their absence. Therefore, a flexible schedule is a must for this role.  This is an amazing opportunity for a skilled leader who would enjoy being part of an operating team of a Green Energy, 40MW biomass electric generating plant. With a staff of 22 full time employees and a 30 year guaranteed performance contract, the plant will be supplied with 200,000 oven dry tons of biomass fuel per year. Shifts:  Various shifts. Must be available for vacation/absence coverage, so a flexible schedule is required.


The candidate will possess a valid BC Interprovincial First Class or Second Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency.


  • Experience in plant operations including at least ten years in hands-on and/or supervision of Power Plant machinery is required.
  • Previous experience commissioning greenfield biomass power plants will be an asset.
  • Experience in a power generating plant.
  • Experience working with biomass.
  • Experience with DCS and CEMS operation is a requirement of this role.
  • General knowledge and/or experience in industrial safety are required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience as a Control Room Operator or Shift Supervisor in a Solid Fuel facility is highly desirable.
  • Supervisory background in an electrical generating facility is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Solid computer skills:  proficiency with spreadsheet, email, and word processing software required; Microsoft Office and Windows preferred. 
  • A working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Software (OWAM) applications will be an asset.
